This project caters for the most isolated and marginalised members of the community. There is a lot of activity locally for the elderly, but elderly Somalis could not access it as they could not speak the language and the cultural barrier is too high to overcome. This means that they have very little to do and our community were concerned about this group. This is why Hodan’s support service is vital for the wellbeing of the elderly generation of the community.
The support group is held once a week for 2 hours and is open to all communities. It involves keep fit sessions, information and empowerment workshops on relevant topics such as health, advice, support and social activities.
This project plays a vital role for the elderly. It allows them to have a purpose, to get out of the house, meet people, to socialise, to learn, to be useful etc but also help them to resolve many pressing issues in their lives as one elderly put it: “This is a home for us, without it we cannot access services”. This project has helped the elders to improve their physical and mental wellbeing, as one service user put it: “This makes me feel happy, light, less stress.”
This service is predominantly used by Somalis, but is open to all community and you can access by contacting Hodan. Our contact details are in our contact details
